Samuel Rajkumar is an independent award-winning photojournalist based in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. He is presently working as a contributing freelance photojournalist for Reuters.
After completing his Bachelor's degree of Science in Visual Communication with dual specializations in Photography and Advertising, he started his career as a copywriter in an advertisement agency. Changing careers soon he became the first Visual Communication graduate to be recruited as a staff photojournalist by national Tamil daily Dinamalar in the year 2000. After his long stint with Dinamalar working across Tamil Nadu and Kerala, he then moved to Times of India's tabloid, the Bangalore Mirror in Bangalore in 2007. From 2008 to 2020, he worked as a senior staff photographer with Deccan Chronicle, Bangalore Edition. Setting his own bench-mark with capturing spectacular news photographs in aviation, sports, wildlife, and politics, working for newspapers, magazines and the new media, for more than 21 years as a photojournalist.
Samuel has won accolades, awards and recognition for his work. Notably, he is the only Indian so far to have won the International Aviation Photo Contest, held by Aviation Week and Space Technology, USA, in 2013. He is the recipient of the first "The Leica Prize '', a special jury award instituted by the crown prince of Hungary for the international wildlife photography contest themed "The Astonishing Wild Life" by CIC, International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation, Hungary in 2014. His article " Pathankot terror attack: Late Lt. Colonel Niranjan Kumar, our very own Hurt Locker " published in Deccan Chronicle, won the special mention award at the Red Ink Awards by Mumbai Press Club in 2017.
